I love saving money when I travel, but I’m certainly not a frugal travel expert.  So, when I had the chance to interview Amy Graff, Best Western’s family travel expert, I jumped at the opportunity.  Amy recently took a family road trip for two and a half weeks on an average of $150 per day!  Amy had so many great tips that I’m going to write a four part feature about my interview.

Amy’s travel tips were in four main categories – transportation, food, hotels, and entertainment.  This post will focus on transportation.

Amy’s family drove the length of the Mississippi River, and in keeping with their budget, did some research in advance on how to save money.  They borrowed a hybrid vehicle so that they could save money on gas, and downloaded an iPhone application called Cheap Gas, that helped pinpoint where they could find the lowest price on gas.  Amy estimates that they saved approximately $120 by driving the hybrid.

Amy also had some great recommendations on how to save on gas, whether or not your family is driving a hybrid.  Make sure that you get a tune-up for the car that you are taking, and ensure that the tires are fully inflated.  Also, skip the roof rack and keep your luggage in your trunk.  Doing that can save up to 5% gas efficiency.  Driving the speed limit also helps with fuel efficiency. Finally, pack light – the lighter the car, the less gas it will use.

Next week, part 2 will focus on how Amy’s family saved money on food!
