ThomastheTankThe train whistles piercing the peaceful fall afternoon, but soon after, the giggles and shouts of happy children become sweetest music of all. I’m with my number one man, my grandson Ryland, and we’re enjoying every kid’s favorite number one engine, Thomas the Tank Engine™ at the Colorado Railroad Museum. Every year, this-little-engine-that-could makes the rounds entertaining thousands of Thomas the Tank fans across the United States, Canada and England.
Last year (2011) was our first Grandmom-Grandson day out together — just me and my buddy. Our fun-filled day began with hopping on board for a 25-minute ride on the 15-ton replica of Thomas the Tank Engine.  The Thomas the Tank Engine™ Mystery On The Rails Tour 2012 family adventure promises to notch up the fun-filled activities with a mystery-themed.

Now in its 7th year, the tour stops in more than 45 US cities, welcoming more than one million passengers, and again it’s stopping in the Denver metro area at Golden’s Colorado Railroad Museum.

ThomasTankFamilyIn addition to the rail-loving Thomas the Tank adventures, games and activities are centered on a mystery, encouraging kids to find clues. Photo opportunities in front of Thomas the Tank are also quite popular, as well as the opportunity to meet Sir Topham Hatt™, Controller of the Railway.

Plan on spending several hours as kids love Thomas & Friends Imagination Station with its temporary tattoos, arts and crafts, train tables and coloring sheets.  Storytelling, video viewing, petting zoo, magic shows and live music round out the entertainment. Of course, you’ll have to exit through the gift shop with its wide range of Thomas and Friends merchandise.

As we chugged around the Colorado Railroad Museum, we were rewarded with a trains-eye view of the 15-acre railroad-themed museum, built on the fascination kids of all ages have with trains. With over 200 locomotives, passenger cars, cabooses, HO Model Railroad and G-scale garden railway, we spent hours just checking out the fun train memorabilia. The Thomas the Tank event also welcomed neighborhood firefighters, and my grandson was beyond excited to crawl into the driver’s seat of the fire truck.
