Family Travel Memories: Atlantic City

Atlantic City BoardwalkAtlantic City is known for gambling and towering hotels; however, my family travel memories include the Boardwalk and the Steel Pier. It was a trip away from the city and concrete to sandy beaches.

Back in the late 1960's to early 1970's, my parents would take me and my sisters to Atlantic City for a week each summer. Other family members would often come along. Sometimes, we would sneak people into one room when money was tight. And what memories we made. Traveling with family in Atlantic City included adventures and hilarity. Adults and children away from home, smelling the saltwater, shopping for taffy and fresh roasted peanuts and rolling chair rides are some of the best times in my life. We often stayed at the Chelsea Hotel, which had a pool on the roof. Going from splashing in fire hydrants to a unique resort was heaven. Most of time was spent outdoors, reveling on the beach or seeing the sights.

Ten years ago on Valentine’s Day 2003, my husband, Andy, and I were living in Guadalajara, México. To celebrate the day of love, his idea was to make me homemade salsa. It was a sweet gesture interrupted by one tiny detail, parsley. When he was at the grocery store, he didn’t realize the Spanish word for cilantro was the same as the English word and instead purchased perejil (translation parsley.) This mistake, one neither of us will make again, created a large vat of salsa that tasted muy mal.
