In honor of Mother's Day, I've decided to honor my daughter, who makes me so proud to be a mother! This week I'm sharing one of my all time favorite moments of motherhood - when we experienced the wonders of the Galapagos Islands together last fall. This was our first day when we went ashore at Mosquera Island, a beautiful sandy beach and a favorite place for Galapagos Sea Lion mothers and their young. This sweet pup was so curious, and really took to my daughter, reaching out as far as he could from the rock to sniff and explore her. She giggled in delight and apprehension, so I joined her and lessened her fears while also teaching her respect for wildlife. With time the sea lion eventually reached across and sniffed my face as my daughter watched, I'll never forget that salty breath and those prickly wet whiskers! Then my daughter and the pup flirted back and forth for a while allowing for some wonderful photo opportunities, but more importantly, wonderful cherished memories. She chose this shot for me to share for Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day!

Marrakech, USA

Growing up in southern California, my earliest travel memories were trips to Disneyland - where I could brave the wildlife of the Jungle Cruise, race through the Alps on Matterhorn bobsleds, and learn about our planet's cultures in It's A Small World. When I began traveling, I remember relating everything back to something at Disneyland. Then at some point, my travels abroad outnumbered my trips to Disneyland, and I was seeing and experiencing things out in the real world without having been introduced first by Disney. Eventually, as a parent, my travels brought me to Walt Disney World in Florida, and Epcot. Here the tables turned - I'd actually travelled to places before I saw the Disney version, and I could say to my kid "wow, Disney did a great job of re-creating a slice of Marrakech"! If not for the white clouds, this photo could easily slip into the Morocco album!

Classic California Chevy

It's not quite summer yet, but there's nothing like a bit of California Dreaming to help get through the spring. There are many iconic images of California, and what may seem every day and ordinary in southern California would be quite out of place in other parts of the country. Set against a blue sky and palm trees, this classic Chevy El Camino carrying surfboards and an American flag tucked in the side is an image that not only celebrates California culture, but also a real pride in Americana. After all, much of our history and culture is reflected in the cars we drive!

St. Lucia

st-lucia

It's about that time of year when people in North America have had enough of winter, and begin dreaming of warmer sunnier places - usually involving a beach. The Caribbean hosts plenty of islands to choose from, and Saint Lucia has plenty of beaches. While the name "Pigeon Island Beach" probably doesn't read well in a travel magazine, the photos certainly do. With good reason: Pigeon Island is in fact a National Park protected by Saint Lucia National Trust. With crystal-clear waters for snorkeling, and historic forts for exploring, there's plenty to do beyond seeking out secluded sandy beaches.

Innsbruck Colors

innsbruck

There's something about the winter sun that, when it shines, colors seem to pop out of an otherwise ordinary scene. This view in Innsbruck, Austria was captured in a brief moment when the sun broke through - a few minutes earlier or later would not have justified a picture. Innsbruck is a popular destination for winter sports, having hosted the winter Olympics more than once. While winters elsewhere may feel dreary, cold, and long, there's something about Innsbruck that that keeps it exciting and invigorating, with spectacular scenery, plenty of activities, and an inviting atmosphere.
