Twitter Party Recap: Religious Travel

train-station

On Monday March 25th, we gathered together to discuss religious travel. A $20 billion a year industry held us captivated as we discussed spiritual journeys and attending services on the road.

HOW DOES TRAVEL AFFECT YOU SPIRITUALLY?

@cindyrichards Everything about travel is inherently spiritual--learning new cultures, reconnecting family, the zen of dealing with delays.
@CarolYemola It is awesome to see a world full of variety that is shared by all of us!
@tibstravel My eyes open wider and my mind stretches to spiritual possibilities when I travel.
@Chaotic_Barb I think expanding your horizons can help you grow spiritually. Don't you?
@mimitravelz Enjoying & appreciating nature/creation makes me feel close to God.
@janettwokay When traveling with my family, I get those, "I'm so lucky to be alive" moments. Such a spiritual connection there.

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR RELIGIOUS OBSERVATIONS/TRADITIONS WHEN YOU TRAVEL?
@Chaotic_Barb Youngest was very concerned there would not be Mass on the Cruise ship for Easter. Had to assure him.
@MaryHeston I love visiting different churches in different towns/countries
@autiglobetrot We try 2 find festivities & participate wherever we go (outside of our own religion)to teach our kids tolerance.
@MaryHeston In the UAE there was a church with services in 10 different languages.

HOW DO YOU OBSERVE/HONOR OTHER RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS WHEN YOU TRAVEL?
@CarolYemola It is good to research before you leave so you are prepared for your destination's religious traditions.
@CindyRichards Religious culture & sites are always on our itinerary. Impossible to understand cultures w/out seeing them.
@janettwokay If I'm traveling with others, I love attending their services. It's a fun way to learn about them.
@allierose In some cities I like visiting the older churches because of the history and being part of the community.

WHAT'S YOUR IDEA OF A FAITH JOURNEY?

@CindyRichards If you believe, as I do, that travel is always spiritual, then all journeys are faith journeys in one form or another.
@mimitravelz Visiting a third world country to build schools, bring supplies, etc.
@TibsTravel For another faith journey I want to try a silent retreat. Contemplative time in hiking place.
@kimorlando A yoga retreat I took a few months ago was a faith journey. Contemplative. Unselfish, Quiet. Was able to listen.

HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN OTHER RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS TO YOUR KIDS WHEN YOU TRAVEL?

@janettwokay If I can answer my kids' questions, I do it on the spot. Otherwise, I enlist help of someone more knowledgable.
@jspd We encourage our kids to respect but explore other cultures and traditions
@allierose I love reading blogs where someone retraces a journey. "Rd to Damascus"

WHAT SPIRITUAL DESTINATIONS ARE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? WHY?

@kimorlando Israel w @momfluential & shamans in Peru.

@CindyRichards Middle East, Taj Mahal. &, thx to @TibsTravel, Nepal.

@allnclusiveblog The Mayan Ruins (stories of human sacrifice remind people not to take religion too seriously.)

@ionmyadventure Israel, Rome, Turkey - Birthplace of Christianity to see Biblical places woud be fascinating.

@autiglobetrot Peru,Thailand and Cambodia since they have many religious places we have not seen.

Twitter Party Recap: Special Needs Travel

Submit to DeliciousSubmit to DiggSubmit to FacebookSubmit to Google BookmarksSubmit to StumbleuponSubmit to TechnoratiSubmit to TwitterSubmit to LinkedIn

special-services-tsaOn March 11th, we gathered together to discuss special needs travel. From tips and ideas for how to make the trip as hassle free as possible to ensuring that your hotel room is accessible to flying with a special needs kid, and what we wish hotels, airlines and destinations knew.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO TRAVELING W/ SPECIAL NEEDS?
@M_thirtymommy Going through security. We always have a rough time with G's equipment.
@blondefabulous Getting our med kits through bag checks. No one does the same searches. It gets frustrating!
@ConnieFoggles Planning so that everything you need is in place during transportation and arrival.
@LoveThatMax 30 ways to respect kids and adults with disabilities bit.ly/10jXs2m

WHAT DO YOU WISH TSA UNDERSTOOD ABOUT TRAVELERS W/ DISABILITIES?
@melinda74 That we need SPACE!!!
@blondefabulous We're not all the same, so vague rules that don't take into account individual needs can be useless & waste time.
@M_thirtymommy I've had a few professional agents but I had 1 ask me what my son did to himself for wearing braces.
@stephanienola I wish they were more patient and polite.
@TibsTravel TSA could use some schooling about oxygen concentrators. Not bombs. Should not dismantle. Read enclosed medical letters.
@LoveThatMax TSA hotline for travelers with disabilities is TSA Cares, toll free # is 1-855-787-2227. Great discussion!
WHAT DO YOU WISH HOTELS KNEW ABOUT SPECIAL NEEDS TRAVEL?
@CarmelLeeMooney Hopefully they know they can't charge pet deposit/cleaning fee, ever...as a service dog is not a pet.
@blondefabulous A good fridge goes a long way for us. My kid's meds need to stay cold. Bad fridge=Bad Vacay/Trip!
@chaotic_barb Hotels: My bathrooms don't look like a hospital. I don't expect your luxury rooms too either. It's insulting & unnecessary,
@janettwokay That sometimes a lot of floorspace is needed in a hotel room. Wheelchairs & walkers need room to move.
@mimitravelz I'm amazed when I stay in a hotel w/o elevators! Doesn't happen often but shouldn't that be standard?

WHAT DO U WISH AIRLINES UNDERSTOOD ABOUT ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL?
@chaotic_barb Airlines: Aisle wheelchairs suck and are humilating. Put wheelchair users in front row whenever possible.
@ConnieFoggles If flying w/ a #specialneeds child, don't miss these 8 tips from @ionMyAdventures: bit.ly/QjpdhD
@ConnieFoggles That mobility devices need to be treated w/ care. Don't throw them in w/ luggage.
@ionmyadventures That if we board first EVERYBODY is happy, including the other passengers!

WHAT DO DESTINATIONS NEED TO DO TO ACCOMMODATE SPECIAL NEEDS TRAVELERS?

@chaotic_barb I wish destinations would bring disabled travelers of all types to test how things really are and give honest feedback.
@M_thirtymommy Check in with the family mid-stay to see if there is anything else that can be done to help.
@AccessSanDiego Accurate and plentiful info needed so we can make right choice.
@janettwokay Ensure there are rooms available for special needs travelers.

BEST ADVICE FOR A 1ST-TIME TRAVELER WITH DISABILITIES?

 @AccessSanDiego Take a deep breath when things don't go as planned.

 @kimorlando Call ahead to prepare your destination for what you need as much as possible. Will reduce stress when you arrive

 @ionmyadventures Stay someplace nice - my first several trips we spent a lot of time in the room as my daughter got used to new environments.

 @stephanienola Reach out to people with disabilities who live there. They know the reality & give honest advice.

 @janettwokay Over-prepare for your trip. Cross all your T's and dot all your I's. Then take a deep breath & enjoy.

Twitter Party Recap: Spring Break

Submit to DeliciousSubmit to DiggSubmit to FacebookSubmit to Google BookmarksSubmit to StumbleuponSubmit to TechnoratiSubmit to TwitterSubmit to LinkedIn

SpringBreak2On March 4th we gathered together to chat Spring Breaks. Budget came up repeatedly as a main driver in planning, with many folks leaning towards road trips to save money. And we all learned that our fearles founder Kim Orlando got bitten by the travel bug early!

How far is the farthest you have/would travel on spring break? Why?

@teresashaw Traveled from Michigan to Florida to visit a certain mouse.

@CindyRichards Went to Xtapa, Mexico, 1 spring break--to @clubmed. It was wonderful--I felt like I had a vacation too (not just the kids).

@blondefabulous Not far. Maybe a neighboring state. I like to relax on spring break, not spend it in a car!

@GoudaCheese007 We also like to visit places in Texas, and that is far from one part to another!

@ArrowSentForth I went to Ireland one year in college. My then-BF, now husband was studying abroad there.

@snowmamas Went to Park City Utah & loved it so much went every year for spring break. So much that we moved here!

What’s your biggest spring break travel challenge?

@janettwokay The biggest challenge is finding reasonable airline tickets. Prices are high during peak travel times.

@kimorlando Coordinating schedules!

@judy511 Keeping Passover.

@erodg Biggest spring break travel challenge? Uh, getting a plan together in all my free time.

@CindyRichards This spring break challenge seems insurmountable: kids have different break weeks.

Where do your kids most want to go on spring break? Where do you want to go?

@minitraveler Basically anywhere/anything to do with legos.

@Stacey5656 Anywhere away from this snow haha !!

@travelermom My kids want to go on a cruise. My husband and I want to go somewhere w/o the kids. :)

@ElenaSonnino My daughter wants to go on a @Disney cruise. I would be happy almost anywhere.

@JazzyTJan I want to go to VA to see family. Rest of family wants to go on a cruise. Not happening this year.

What do you pack to ensure a successful spring break roadtrip?

@amycoh I like to bring a brand new toy or book too - it keeps the kids entertained to explore something new.

@jspd Camera, water bottle, extra toilet paper because you never know when you'll need some.

@bodinesteph Lots of extra baby supplies for me this year!

@WanderingTastes And good coffee for ME and @Karycun.

@Jessica_davis4 We pack like we r moving. U never can take enough. I ALWAYS 4get something. Usually my phone charger.

@PaulEisenberg A roll of paper towels handy on the back windshield. Forgot it the last couple times, wish we hadn't.

What do you look for in a spring break destination?

@allierose During spring break I want a quick fun getaway that is close by. For me, its the ocean.

@CindyRichards I look for a place to relax. Beaches. Warm sun. No pressure. So important, esp when the kids hit the pressure of HS & college.

@ramblingstump One thing. WARM!

@PaulEisenberg For family vacay a springbreak destination must have an absence of college kids. They make me nervous.

@erodg If mama's happy, everyone's happy: beach & food.

What don’t you want your kids to know about your spring break college trip?

@JazzyTJan I never had a spring break college trip. Only trips were home (about 500 miles). Do I get a do over?

@autiglobetrot In essence Don't do ANYTHING i did!

@CoupleDumb Never did spring break in college. I did all my bad stuff close to home.

@WanderingTastes Some things are best left unshared.

@kimorlando Another spring break - did not tell parents - took TRAIN from Nogales to Mazatlan with chickens and students.
