Over the past year, I have made this crazy transition from a family of four to a single mom with two kids. While juggling everything else as a single mom the one thing I feared most was giving up our family adventures. I have a strong belief that family travel builds life long bonds, lasting memories, and stress relieving moments.
This transition has been far from easy, but after a few complete disasters, moments that I truly believed I would fail, and some “aha” moments I have a list of ideas that will help cut the stress of traveling as a single mom.
Traveling at the holidays often means figuring out a way to travel with gifts. Here are four last-minute gift suggestions that are very easy to pack and take along:
My mother has wanted to take my children to Disneyland for a long time...since they were toddlers. Now, they are seven and eight. I resisted: I don’t like crowds. I don’t like lines, I don’t like battling people for a place in line. I didn’t want to go. I have no problem with Disneyland per se, it’s just not my thing. But finally the time was upon us. As a Type A person, I did some research before we went. I got a book out of the library to study up on HOW to go to Disneyland for the uninitiated. This was a heavy book! I also went to some websites and articles to study up: yes, you do need to acquaint yourself with at least a few pointers before you go.
Halloween is such a great holiday for so many reasons. I wish it lasted longer than a day. But having a toddler makes it challenging. You don’t want to spook the little one so bad that they fear Halloween for the rest of their lives and you don't want them hyped up on sugar for the next couple of weeks. However, you also don’t want them to miss out on the holiday either. So how do you prepare your toddler for Halloween fun and what’s the best way to keep them from consuming too much candy?
Walking, block after block, mile after mile, is a signature of travel. I have always enjoyed walking, exploring parts of a city that might not otherwise be seen. My walking was always in heels. Day after day living in Florence, in Venice, visiting cities like New York or Philadelphia. But then there was some weight gain. Some decreased physical activity. And all of a sudden my feet were not the same anymore. Shoes started to bother me. My feet started to swell. My feet were no longer just get up and go kind of feet.
Spending a family vacation at your in-laws’ home can be challenging. Yet if you prepare a little in advance, not only might you actually enjoy your trip, you might even want to go back again next year. Follow these few tips learned the hard way—by failing to consider them during our last family visit to grandma’s house.
