We encourage you to approach Oregon the way Oregonians do, with a sense of humor and adventure. So giddy-up! You've got some Oregon exploring to do...
When Easterners with a hankering for adventure heeded the magic words "go west," they headed for Oregon country. Their sense of adventure lingers today in Oregon, where seven distinctive regions — the Coast, Portland Metro, Mt. Hood/Columbia River Gorge, the Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon, Central Oregon, and Eastern Oregon — represent a wealth of diverse climates, cultures and recreational opportunities. We’ve made it easy to find your way to Oregon’s treasures.
Mt. Hood and the cliffs of the awe-inspiring Columbia River Gorge look down on quaint riverfront towns, countless waterfalls and exhilarating windsurfing waters. The often-photographed Mt. Hood is home to four ski areas, including historic Timberline Lodge, a classic WPA-era mountain lodge, which also happens to offer North America’s longest ski season and Mt. Hood Ski Bowl, which offers the country’s largest night skiing area. Run-off from Mt. Hood’s volcanic slopes enriches soil in the valleys below, making the Hood River Valley one the largest fruit-growing regions in Oregon with apricots, apples, blueberries, pears—even wine grapes that make for exceptional vintages. For those who prefer the indoors, historical wonders can be also be discovered in Troutdale’s Harlow House, The Dalles’ Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Wasco County Historical Museum.
With 300 days of sunshine a year (as many as Arizona!) and oodles of fresh powder come winter, the high desert country of Central Oregon is an idyllic playground for sports lovers. Rekindle your spirit with a gamut of possibilities such as world famous golf at more than 25 unique courses, coveted fly-fishing at over 150 rivers and lakes, and outdoor adventures including hiking, rock climbing at Smith Rock and an abundance of snow sports atop Mt. Bachelor. And what’s more, the region boasts an equally impressive selection of restaurants and breweries, a vibrant nightlife, unique lodging and a growing arts scene.
