Historic Corinth, Mississippi, is a hotbed of Confederate pride and the site of two notable Civil War battles over the town. It’s location at the junction of two railroads made the town strategically significant to the Confederacy during the Civil War, although it ultimately was occupied by the Union Army.

Corinth, home to approximately 15,000 people, boasts nearly 20 historic sites that have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, many of them having to do with the Civil War. 

The lowest temperature ever recorded in Mississippi struck here in January 1966 – a bitter 19 degrees below zero.  Winters are typically much milder and summers are very warm. 

The free activities listed below will appeal particularly to Civil War enthusiasts. 

1)  Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center- This National Park Service facility features interactive exhibits, a multimedia presentation on the Battle of Shiloh and a video on the Battle of Corinth.  Open daily 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

2)  Corinth Contraband Camp- This National Park Service site is called the “Birthplace of Freedom,” because many slaves found refuge here before the end of the Civil War.  Seven life-size bronze statues depicting the lives of the people who lived here - surround a quarter-mile trail.  Open daily. 

3)  Jacinto Courthouse– The Jacinto Courthouse is an 1836 Federal style building which is no longer in use.  Near the Courthouse Square are a park, walking trails, country store, and RV hook-ups.  Hours vary depending on the season.   

4)  Borroum’s Drug Store)  – Founded in 1865 by A.J. Borroum, it is the oldest store in continuous operation in Mississippi.  It houses Native American and Civil War artifacts and features an authentic, working soda fountain.  Open Monday-Saturday. 

5)  Waits Jewelry and Fine Gifts- The store was founded by Earnest Waits in the 1800s.  He painted beautiful murals above the showcases and a small area of the store is dedicated to him and his wife, Eugenia.  Open Monday – Saturday. 

6)  Corinth Artist Guild Gallery- This gallery has an extensive collection of Southern regional art.  Artists exhibit one-of-a-kind works ranging from realism, impressionism and abstract art to sculptures, stained glass, jewelry and other decorative arts.  Open Tuesday – Saturday. 

7)  The Railroad Crossing- This crossroads of two railroads – the Memphis and Charleston and Mobile and Ohio – identified Corinth as a strategic location in the Western Theater of the Civil War.  

8)  Battery F)  – During the summer of 1862, Union forces constructed two arcs of batteries surrounding Corinth.  Still a pristine earthwork, Battery F was overrun during the fierce fighting on the first day of the Battle of Corinth. 

9)  Pickin’ on Courthouse Square– Every Thursday evening, blue grass and gospel musicians from the area come together on the Courthouse Square to play music and encourage fellowship. 

10)  Crossroads Park and Fun Station– Hiking and recreation may be found at the Crossroads Park.  A paved walking trail and fun station playground are available as well.  Open daily.
