Ann Arbor, MI, isn't just about the University of Michigan, although it does offer a lot for students, townies and visitors alike. Take a visit to Tree Town in southeast Michigan and enjoy one of several free things to do.
Ann Arbor Farmer's Market: Open Saturdays all year round and on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the summer, the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market offers locally produced fruits and vegetables, flowers, cider, plants, crafts, jam, honey, and maple syrup.
Burton Tower Carillon: Every weekday at noon, people gather to listen listen to the Carillon at Burton Tower. In addition, the observation deck and bellchamber are open to the public from 12-1 on these days, as well as for most announced recitals and special events. An internationally renowned summer recital series takes place on Monday evenings throughout July and August.
Cobblestone Farm: Take a step back in time with a visit to the historic Cobblestone Farm, where visitors can see a log cabin circa 1835; farmhouse built in 1844; and an animal barn where chickens, guinea hens, and ducks live all year.Find the Fairy Doors
Fairy doors, tiny doors set into walls, doors and other structures inside and around local businesses, began appearing in the 1990s. Now they can be found in several buildings downtown and around town – if you look closely. The Urban Fairies web site offers a map and tips for finding the doors.
Kerrytown Shops: A trio of century-old buildings make up Kerrytown, where an old-fashioned indoor market, shops and cafes are surrounded by exposed bricks and beams, benches, and a tower of 17 European crafted bells.
Matthaei Botanical Gardens: Get back to nature by visiting the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Along with lush gardens and water features (be sure to look at the many goldfish and frogs), the gardens offers walking trails, comfortable benches and a children's garden, edible gardens, and more. Also a popular spot for wedding ceremonies, the gardens hold several events throughout the summer, including plant sales and gardening classes.
Museum of Natural History: The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History provides exhibits including displays on prehistoric life – in fact, it has the most extensive dinosaur exhibits in the state of Michigan – as well as Michigan wildlife, anthropology, and geology. A planetarium is located on site, and the museum offers many public lectures and tours.
Michigan Marching Band Practice: Every Monday through Saturday during football season, guests are welcome to take a seat on the bleachers and watch the U-M Marching Band practice for upcoming halftime shows at Elbel Field.
