Allergy-Friendly Snacks for Your Next Road Trip

Food-Allergy-Travel-Snacks-TravelingMomTraveling with kids who have food allergies means we can’t stop just anywhere for a bite to eat. So I pack allergy-friendly snacks for every road trip, whether it’s to Grandma’s house or to run errands—it’s easier, safer and cheaper. Here are a few allergy-friendly snack ideas for your next road trip:

Allergy Friendly Trail Mix

The beauty of this snack is that you can make it ahead of your trip with whatever allergy-friendly foods you have on hand. I like to use the following:
  • Pretzels (that are not manufactured in a plant with peanuts)
  • Cheerios® or Chex® (or gluten-free alternative)
  • Craisins or raisins
  • Dairy-free chocolate chips (I recommend Enjoy Life®)

Store in a snack-size bag or similar travel-friendly container and don’t forget to pack wipes to clean up chocolatey fingers afterwards.

Dairy-Free Cereal Treats

To prepare an allergy-friendly version of this kid favorite, use a dairy-free butter like Earth Balance® and safe marshmallows. We use Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows. You can also buy vegan marshmallows at an organic market. If gluten/wheat is a concern, try gluten-free Rice Krispies® or another gluten-free cereal. (Rice Krispies Treats® don’t have to be made with Rice Krispies. Think outside the cereal box.) Amp up the fun factor by using cookie cutters to create shapes—and a snack—your kids will love.

GoGo squeeZ

The creator of GoGo squeeZ™ must be a parent—this snack is so kid-and-travel-friendly. It’s applesauce and applesauce fruit blends in a pouch with a replaceable cap. The experience of drinking applesauce is a little strange but the applesauce tastes great. And the best part (aside from the easy cleanup)? It’s all natural and gluten-dairy-nut-free!

Fruit and Fruit Snacks for Travel

Fruit and fruit snacks are my favorite snack for kids (and adults) because they're healthy and travels fairly well. Bananas can easily be brown bagged; apples can be sliced and packed to go (try a little Fruit-Fresh® or lemon juice to keep the slices from browning); grapes can be frozen the night before and make a cool snack on a hot car ride (cut in half first for young children). Gummy fruit snacks are another alternative. The individual packets fit nicely into mommy’s purse for a quick snack on the go.

Don’t Forget to Pack a Drink

Water in a travel mug is my first choice for a road trip drink; I don’t worry if it’s spilled. Juice is OK but can result in a sticky mess. Forgo the boxed version and try mixing juice with water in a sippy cup instead.

What allergy-friendly snacks do you pack for a road trip?
