The South Carolina Aquarium is more than just an aquarium…it’s a journey with a close up view of South Carolina’s nature, from the mountains to the sea. My children enjoyed the camping exhibit with real skunks and a fake campfire (and the guess that smell game) as much as the albino alligator, only one of 50 known to exist.
Since when is travel focused on history fun for the kids? Well, with the Charleston spin on things, since when isn’t it? All kids love building forts and what boy doesn’t play soldier? Yep, Fort Sumter fits the bill for fun there. It’s where the Civil War began. You can still see the artillery in the walls of the fort that got caught in the walls instead of crashing through it. It’s definitely one of those places where you wish the walls could talk.
How often can your kids get up close and personal with a bald eagle, a falcon, hawk or owl? The Birds of Prey exhibit at the Avian Conservation Center near Charleston, South Carolina, is as close, and as cool, as it gets. A bit off the beaten path, if you’re in the Charleston area it’s totally worth the drive to bring your family out to see these amazing birds in person. You can take a guided tour of the grounds and learn all about what makes each bird unique.

There’s an endless list of entertaining activities and attractions for the kids that adults will enjoy, too. The region now has something called the Explorer’s Club that can help guide you toward the right activity for children of all ages.
There’s something delicious for everyone and every appetite at Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms, near Charleston, SC. During our visit, we ate breakfast at Sea Island Grill, dinner at The Lettered Olive (we learned on our trip that’s a kind of seashell), and had a basket of food delivered to us from Dunes Deli for dinner another night. There’s an ice cream parlor on the boardwalk to the beach. Essentially, there’s something for everyone and every appetite.
