The Florida Historic Capitol Museum in Tallahasee tour is as much about the politics of the state through the years is at is about the capitol building. You see, the capitol building in Florida has evolved through time, and what you see from South Monroe Street is not at all what you see from the back side of the building, on South Duval. That’s because the building on South Monroe has changed through time. It wasn’t even the original, though. The first was actually a couple log buildings. What you see now from Duval is where the nitty-gritty of state lawmaking is taken care of. What you see from Monroe is a beautiful tribute to the past.
I believe the Tallahassee Museum has the wrong name, but is exactly right if you want to find some family fun in this city. The Tallahassee Museum sounds like something featuring the history of Tallahassee, but it actually features the wildlife (and I’m not talking about the crazy college kids at nearby FSU or FAMU). There’s more than wildlife here, but that’s the part your family is going to remember most if they are anything like mine.
The Mission San Luis is based in Tallahassee, just a few streets away from the craze of college life at FSU, but when you step through the doors of the Mission you’ll feel centuries melt away.
A daily interactive parade, nightly entertainment that is projected on waterfall screens in the lagoon and can be seen throughout the park, and a 36 hole miniature golf course that is inspired by the Hollywood drive-in movies…all part of the changes coming this year to Universal Orlando.
The Florida History Museum in Tallahassee takes you on a walk through time with some of the state’s first inhabitants to the state’s role in some of today’s most popular movies. This is the museum I thought the kids would enjoy least, but I have to admit they had a great time, thanks in part to a scavenger hunt worksheet they were given at the door. So, while I went around picking up facts about the history of the state of my birth, they were busy trying to find specific items in each room. What a genius idea to keep them engaged!
The Mary Brogan Museum in Tallahassee is created for family fun, no doubt, especially when you head upstairs to the fun (learning) center. Before going upstairs we walked through the ground floor exhibit of the Titanic: Artifacts on Exhibit. It’s hard not to be moved by the old relics, recovered from the ocean floor. There’s even an iceberg replica on display that you are encouraged to put your hand on so you can feel just how cold the water was the night the ship went down. Trust me. It’s cold. The artifacts are haunting. Overall, the exhibit will leave you with awe.
