Weekend Retreat in Cold Spring, NY

Cold Spring NY, Cold Spring, Weekend trips from New York, Pig Hill Inn
Pig Hill InnEveryone needs a break and recently, another single mom and I headed off to Cold Spring, New York for some serious R&R. I had never been to Cold Spring and was excited to check out the town.

As we did not want to be encumbered by renting a car, we took the 70 minute train ride from New York on Metro-North. The Cold Spring train stop is literally a five minute walk to Main Street.  the dictionary, you find a picture of Pig Hill Inn.

In the morning, we were served an incredibly, delicious breakfast that included fresh fruit, omelets, bacon, french toast, orange juice, coffee. There is also lovely indoor garden room with a windowed ceiling so you can enjoy your breakfast with the morning sunshine and not in some dreary dining room. The innkeepers could not have been more accomodating with our children's requests. They were happy to bring us scrambled eggs instead of omelets for my daughter.

As if the breakfast was not enough, there were fresh scones and chocolate cake to nibble after we came back from our walk through town.  There is also hot tea and cocoa available 24/7.

On the ground floor, there is a beautiful main sitting room with a beautiful fireplace where you can relax and chat with friends or just hang out.

We were both happy with our rooms as each had it's own bathroom. There are a couple in which you have to share a bathroom so be careful when reserving your room.  The rooms with the hot tub were also booked, next time. For you television junkies, there are none in the room so be prepared to truly relax.

After settling into the rooms, we headed out to Main Street for a stroll to check out the town. If you are looking for a relaxing 5 block town, Cold Spring is your town. Main Street basically consists antique stores, cafes and restaurants. If you are into shopping especially antiques, this is your town. Although we were with three kids, I actually had a chance to wander in a few stores and ended up buying two vintage bags, both for $35, not bad.

Once you have had your fill of antique stores, head to the other side of Main Street towards the Hudson River. There is a lovely esplanade where you can hang out, sit, watch the mountains and enjoy a peaceful afternoon. Our daughters pretty much spent the day running up and down the esplanade and throwing rocks into the water.

While we spent the weekend in Cold Spring, you could easily make it a day trip given it's close proximity to New York City. In addition, we did not have a  chance to partake in all the outdoor activities.  If you are an outdoor person, there is plenty to do from hiking to kayaking.
