icepalaceHotel De Glace – Quebec’s Ice Hotel: Not cold enough?

Tour or sleep in a hotel made of ice, fashioned after the original Ice Hotel in Sweden. The building is made of 15,000 tons of snow and ice, offers 88 rooms – most of which have themed sculpted walls. I slept in the treehouse room – the ice walls were sculpted into knotty branches and leaves but my favorite was the beehive room with honeycomb walls and a huge bee overhead.

There is a bar with maple whiskey and hoppin music, ice blocks if you are in the mood for DIY carving, a wedding chapel if you are in the mood for nuptials and a bathroom - but it's in the warm house.

It’s hard not to want to spend a lot of time in the bathroom.

St. Kitts for Family-Friendly Vacation

st-kitts-Cockleshell-BeachThe first thing you should know about St. Kitts is that it is wonderfully unspoiled. They’ve been in the tourism game for less than 10 years (sugar growing and processing was the main industry until very recently), which means that it doesn’t have the feel of some other islands in that region, where you get bombarded with tour offers, people trying to braid your hair, and such.

Beijing Zizhuyuan1Most Beijing parks have something of a mini-amusement park on grounds. The one closest to us where we take the kids when the weather is nice is Zizhuyuan (Purple Bamboo) Park.

Peru-RockMachu Picchu might be Peru’s headliner, but there’s an eco-lodge families can visit in the Amazon jungle named an international Sustainable Standard-Setter for 2012. I was there in 2008 and my memories are sustainable too. Posada Amazonas is the name.
