For some strange reason, many people tend to equate vegetarianism with Puritanism, thinking that if my family doesn’t eat meat, we also don’t eat dessert, or enjoy cocktails. Ok, the kids don’t drink. But dessert? Listen, after a tofu casserole, we deserve a piece of chocolate.
At Hershey’s Chocolate World, next to Herseheypark, you can have lots of chocolate (but no tofu). One of the newer attractions, Hershey's Chocolate Tasting Adventure, teaches a little about chocolate while letting you sample of few different types.
I’m not sure if we were the only vegetarians at the tasting, but our group of five had the only dark chocolate lovers in the audience of 25 or so. Some of the people there refused to even nibble their dark chocolate, but I would have reacted the same way to a bacon-infused chocolate.
We first got to drink chocolate milk with a bit of cinnamon and coffee in it – delicious. Then it was on to the hard core eating: a miniature Hershey’s milk chocolate bar, a piece of Hershey’s dark chocolate (62% cacao), a Scharffen Berger (48% cacao) artisanal milk chocolate, (Scharffen Berger is now owned by Hershey’s) a piece of Bliss, a mixture of dark and milk chocolate, and a Hershey’s Kiss filled with caramel.
As at a wine tasting, we sniffed first. The ‘professor’ encouraged us to take a small bite of the chocolate, let it melt on our tongues, and discuss the different notes we got – fruity, winy, etc. We did this for all chocolates except the Kiss, which everyone just popped into their mouths.
