When it’s time to get away from the bustle of family life, slow down and reconnect, the wide beaches, warm sunshine and laid-back nature of the Caribbean can be just what a family ordered. Frank Sinatra said it best, "Chicago is my kind of town...", and truly, it is. Chicago is the perfect combination of a metropolitan city with mid-Western flair. If you are looking for a Big City experience in a clean, welcoming environment, then put Chicago high on your list as a great place to travel with your family. Chicago provides a spectacular nightlife along with world class dining and hotels. A city rich in history and culture, there are many options if you decide to travel with your kids. From the Navy Pier to the Lincoln Zoo and the Field Museum, the family will have plenty to choose from to keep them entertained. Shopping is a must-do activity in Chi-Town. Fashionistas who seek the latest can find chic boutiques in areas off the Magnificent Mile like Armitage Avenue, Wicker Park and Bucktown. Of course, there is always Wrigley Field and Soldier Field, sure to satisfy any sports fan's need for nostalgia, no matter who you root for. Breathtaking and internationally recognized architecture and skyscrapers provides Chicago with depth and dimension, creating pockets within the city to explore. If you are bringing a soon-to-be college student with you, be sure to check out the impressive campuses at University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and University of Illinois at Chicago. Future Med students might enjoy a quick look about Rush University Medical Center. Depending on the season, Chicago offers family fun summer festivals, winter wonderlands and crisp, autumn weather. There is a reason that Los Angeles is a top destination for family vacations: It has all-season activities for the whole family no matter what the age or interest. Sometimes big cities can feel impersonal and overwhelming but L.A., while big, is made up of many smaller neighborhoods to explore and each has its own distinct personality and unique amusements to discover. Of course, when you visit Los Angeles you are going to want to be outside. The city boasts an average of about 284 sunny days a year. You can stroll down the beach in Malibu, browse fresh air markets or bungee jump on the piers in Santa Monica, or gaze at the stars at the Griffith Observatory. Hawaii was welcomed into the United States in 1959 creating a no-passport tropical getaway for Americans. Visitors are drawn to the Aloha spirit with floral leis and a hula skirt, compliments of the renowned Hawaiian culture. Millions of travelers continue to escape the mainland for a tropical beach vacation on the six distinctive main islands of Hawaii. New York City, NYC, The Big Apple, Gotham - There are many ways to refer to America's largest city. No matter what you call it, it is a fabulous destination for families, with multiple children’s museums, zoos in all 5 boroughs, historical attractions, and family-friendly Broadway shows. You can experience new food options from gourmet to authentic ethnic cuisine from every part of the world, or satisfy a finicky palate, with restaurants that specialize in a variety of dumplings, or kid-friendly fare. New York City offers so much to see and do, that it's definitely a destination that your family will want revisit time and time again.
Insider Tip - Don't Plan on Driving in New York City: Between heavy traffic, aggressive drivers and costly parking, it's better to take public transportation, a taxi cab, or hire a car and driver. If you are driving to NYC, park the car and get a Metrocard, good for subways, buses and a ride on the Roosevelt Island tram. Kids ride free if they are shorter than 44 inches. Walking is often the fastest way between two points, so bring comfortable walking shoes. But this doesn’t mean you should show up at a 5 star restaurant or Broadway show in sneakers and a fanny pack. Many New Yorkers carry nice shoes with them and change shoes. Bring a sturdy, easily collapsible stroller with you.
