My New Chicago “Family”

Chicago scenicI am a Hokie - meaning I graduated from Virginia Techand, upon doing so, I became a member of a very large family often referred to as the “The Hokie Nation.”  It's one thing to know you belong to a “family” of alumni, but it's entirely different to experience it away from home. I realized the difference when traveling to Chicago for a higher-ed conference.

The American Marketing Association Higher Ed Symposium was packed with a pretty full agenda, but when my colleague said she had called the Chicago Hokie Alumni Association to ask if we could meet up with some fellow Hokies for drinks, I thought “why not?”

For me, discovering my Hokie family in Chicago meant I had access to great advice on where to eat, how to get around in the city, what attractions to see and when was the best time to see them, and I got to make new friends who instantly felt like old friends.

It won't matter where you work or live, from graduation day forward, you're a member of a new family: THE ALUMNI FAMILY. So why not pick up the phone or send off an email and meet your new family on your next trip to a new (or old) city?
