8 Things to Do When Visiting Memphis, Tennessee
Missouri TravelingMom8 Things to Do When Visiting Memphis, Tennessee

For those living in the middle of Missouri, there are only a few options for hitting the "big city" -- St. Louis, Mo., or Memphis, Tenn. Last spring, my gal pal Jessie and I chose to visit Memphis for the first time.

Our trip to Memphis might be one of the most unorganized trips I've ever take [ ... ]

When planning out your summer road trip don't overlook Devil's Tower, Wyoming. It is one of my favorite side trips and possibly one of the most overlooked National Parks.

7 Tips to Avoid Gaining Weight When Cruising

7TipsCruisepic7Setting sail on a cruise ship often leads to extra fun, entertainment, locations and unfortunately, extra pounds. Yes, waistlines have the tendency to expand a bit with all inclusive buffets, 24-hour room service, unlimited desserts and those ice-cold island drinks. While it's fun to splurge when soaking in the rays lounging by the upper-deck pool, it's also important not to over indulge. I recently took my third cruise adventure, this one on Disney Cruise Line's newest ship, the Fantasy, and discovered seven tips to help beat the bulge and avoide gaining weight when facing those cruise temptations:

Go for a Run
runDisney hosts the Castaway Cay 5K on Disney's private island in the Bahamas. It's fun for experienced runners or newbies. If your cruise doesn't have an organized run you can still get moving. If you leave the ship make sure to stay safe by taking a partner and planning your route before you leave.

7TipsCruisepic1Walk the Track
Most large cruise ships have a track to run or walk. The views and fresh ocean air often make you forget your exercising.

Choose Lighter Cuisine
Most eateries offer healthy options and cruises are no exception. The Fantasy listed lighter options on each dinner menu; and fresh fruit and healthy choices were available at all the buffets.

Find the Fitness Center
Take a class, do some strength training or hop on a treadmill and enjoy exercising on board.

Limit Drinks
Those flirty-fun drinks can be so alluring and endless soda fountains make it easy to over do it. Put a limit on your intake and make sure to fill up on water.

Stay Active
Basketball courts, miniature golf, and water slides - it's unreal some of the attractions available on ships. Get moving and burn some calories while having fun. Swimming is an excellent workout.

7TipsCruisepic3Jump Ship
Take advantage of excursions and explore your destinations. Walking tours, playing on the beach, and other tourist opportunities can be a great way to stay active.

Until next time, I'm off and running ...
