Amococo Luminarium at Ann Arbor Summerfest

Amococo Luminarium at Ann Arbor Summerfest is an inflatable sculpture with light and color to explore.

Amococo_luminarium_insideMove over, bounce house. The Amococo luminarium is an inflatable sculpture filled with color and light that you can wander through or sit down and relax in one of the many nooks.

The enormous sculpture is a product of the United Kingdom's Architects of Airand has traveled around the world since its creation in 1992, from the Guggenheim in Spain to the Sydney Opera House in Australia. Making its appearance at the Ann Arbor Summerfest June 23-26, the sculpture is inflated each morning and deflated each night as it rests on Palmer Field on the campus of the University of Michigan.

Amococo_luminariumMy family and I had the chance to visit during its four-day stay and loved wandering the colored corridors of the sculpture. Eighty people are allowed in at a time, so the wait for entrance can be long (we arrived a half hour before it opened at 4:00 and waited in line for an hour). However, the extraordinary experience of being inside the enormous sculpture more than made up for the wait. Both the adults and the kids enjoyed walking through the sculpture and exploring the maze of colors and lights inside. In one area, we were surprised to find interpretive dancers performing a dance for onlookers. But the biggest hit was the many nooks throughout the sculpture, where we could sit down and watch passers by or just relax in a sort of cocoon of color.
