momaNew York City is home to hundreds of art, culture and heritage museums. During the summer, and even during the rest of the year, museums have special hours that don't require visitors to pay.  It's just a matter of keeping track and making a plan to go. 

So, take out your calendars, and try to check out some of these amazing museums with various types of free admission in NYC.  Many have special hours when the public can get in for free; many allow children under a certain age free admission all the time. Most of these specials are not particular to summertime, so you can take advantage of the free admission all year.  Just reconfirm on the web sites for hours and fees, or check your local listings.

American Folk Art Museum,45 West 53rd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues
Kids under 12 are free all the time; everyone is free on Friday nights from 5:30-7:30pm.

Brooklyn Children's Museum, 145 Brooklyn Avenue at St. Marks Avenue.
Children under 1 are free.

Brooklyn Museum
, 200 Eastern Parkway at Washington Avenue.
Museum entrace is suggested donation only.
At the Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturdays, thousands of visitors enjoy free programs of art and entertainment each month from 5 to 11 p.m.  Parking is a flat rate of $4 starting at 5 p.m. All other Saturdays, the Museum closes at 6 p.m.  The next FREE Saturday is August 7th when they are featuring an event for Together for Haiti.

Thursday 4-6pm pay what you wish.

Children's Museum of Manhattan
, 212 West 83rd Street between Amsterdam Avenue & Broadway.
Children under 1 free; first Friday of the month 5-8pm free.

Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, 2 East 91st Street at Fifth Avenue.
Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and Smithsonian Institution Members and children under age 12 are admitted free.

El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Avenue between 104th and 105th Streets.
Members and children under 12 are free; seniors free on Wednesdays.

The Frick Collection, 1 East 70th Street, between Fifth and Madison avenues.
Sunday 11am-1pm is pay what you wish.

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Pier 86, Twelfth Avenue at 46th Street.
Children under age 3 free; members of retired and active military duty free.

The Jewish Museum, 1109 Fifth Avenue.
Children under 12 are always free; Saturdays are free all day.

Liberty Science Center, 222 Jersey City, New Jersey.
Children under age 2 are free.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street.
Children under the age of 12 are always free; museum entrace is suggested donation only.

The Morgan Library & Museum, 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street.
Children under the age of 12 are free.

Museum of Arts & Design
, 2 Columbus Circle at Broadway.
Members and children under the age of 12 are free; Thursday 6-9pm is pay what you wish.

Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue between 103rd and 104th Streets
Children under age 12 are free.

Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), 11 West 53rd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues.
Children 16 and under are free; Fridays 4-8pm free for everyone.

MOMA PS1, 22-25 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City, Queens.
Admission is suggested donation of $10.

National Museum of the American Indian, Alexander U.S. Custom House, 1 Bowling Green between State and Whitehall Streets.
Admission free for everyone all the time.

Neue Galerie New York, 1048 Fifth Avenue at 86th Street.
First Friday of each month free 6-8pm.  Children under the age of 12 not admitted.

New Museum of Contemporary Art, 235 Bowery at Prince Street.
Children under 18 free.

Rubin Museum of Art, 150 West 17th Street at Seventh Avenue.
Children under 12 are free; College students are $2 with ID; Fridays 7-10pm free.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Avenue.
Children under 12 are always free; Saturday 5:45-7:45 is pay what you wish.

South Street Seaport Museum, 12 Fulton Street at South Street.
Children under 2 free.

Staten Island Children's Museum, 1000 Richmond Terrace at Snug Harbor Road, Staten Island.
Children under 1 free; Grandparents free on Wednesdays.

Studio Museum in Harlem, 144 West 125th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.
Children under 13 are free; Sundays free.

Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge
, 290 Conover Street at Pier 44.
Suggested donation $5.

Whitney Museum of American Art, 945 Madison Avenue at 75th Street.
Children under 18 are free.
