Traveling with Pets: A Smelly Encounter

doggyIs it a new trend to carry “Fifi” in your purse or bring along the entire pet family, including the three dogs, cat and a ferret, on family vacation?  Yes, a ferret! While traveling with my family to Washington D.C.,a woman with three dogs, two small kids and a ferret were checking in at the airline counter in front of us.  Not surprisingly, her hands were too full. As we stood there, her Labrador walked off and my husband was nice enough to chase after him; she hadn’t even realized he wandered away. It appeared that they were on a vacation.

As we boarded the plane, guess who was directly in front of us? Yep, you guessed it, the dog lady.  Giving her the benefit, I told my husband not to worry and it was probably no big deal.  After we settled into our seats, the one dog she carried onboard began to yelp.  I’m sure they could hear it in the back row. Thankfully just after takeoff, the dog settled down...and started farting.

How do I know the disgusting smell was coming from the seat ahead. The dog was farting up a storm. How do I know this?  My mom is a dog lover and her dog blows us “kisses from the behind” quite often. It’s a distinct smell that can clear the room. The entire flight was mixed with moments of pleasure and moments of wanting to gag!

Flying with Pets

On our return flight, I spoke with one nice lady traveling with her dog who said she had already flown for several hours with her dog that morning and still had one more cross country flight to go. Her longest flight with her dog was once 20+hrs.  Many airports are not yet “pet friendly” in providing areas for pets to roam and relieve themselves.  So “Fido” is stuck in a carry on for however long you choose to fly.

I get that many people out there love their animals to death and take them everywhere.  But to be stuck on a 5hr flight with a dog farting thekitty entire time is a bit much for you to expect others to endure.

If you’re considering taking your animal on a flight, look into the options; doggy sitter at home, ride the flight with cargo or have them stay with a relative or friend. Not only is this easier, it’s most likely cheaper. Flying your pet can cost anywhere from $75 to $200 per flight.  If you do choose to carry on your pet, think about what you feed them the night before, and as recommended on a pet travel website, “Do not feed your pet for four to six hours prior to air travel. Small amounts of water can be given before the trip.”  This advice can be beneficial for all parties involved.

Do you fly with your pets? Do you have any great suggestions for people who do? Your comments are welcome!

It can be pretty stressful (as well as stinky!) to travel with pets in cabin. These days, when pets travel in the cargo hold, it is climate-control led and pressurized just like the passenger cabin above. Arrangements can also be made to keep pets off the tarmacs and out of the heat/cold when traveling so they can fly year round!
We have a free e-book that you can download that tells people how they can safely fly their pets on their own:

You know, I'm not one for complaining so unless I truly feel the need, I rarely call for the attendants. I'm unsure about the "anti-acid", I just know that vets recommend not feeding your animal several hours before a flight, for any distance. For the sake of their bowels and in this instance other passengers.
I will say I was grossed out when I noticed the lady had a spare "pee pad" for the dog in her seat holder. I was thinking to myself "WHAT will she do with that?" If the dog craps does she think shes going to put it somewhere?
I ALSO had concern for passengers with allergies. I do know airlines have a limit of typically 3-4 animals per flight, but with the circulating air throughout the cabin, doesn't it spread anyways? Some definate questions I think I will spend some time getting answers to on my next flight!
As for the plane food, the food she got out to feed her children, almost smelt as bad as her dogs "kisses". GOODNESS, what was she feeding them and her dog?

I cannot imagine being subjected to that---and how horrible for the animals to have to hold it for such potentially long periods. People don't think, do they? Or they don't really value their pets' comfort.....yik es.

I have no idea how I have missed being on a flight with a pet since I used to travel so much on business. Good lord, I cant even begin to imagine having to deal with farting pet. That truly is inconsiderate.

To the earlier poster, what to do people do are allergic? I am allergic to cats and frankly i dont travel with my allergy pills. Whats a person to do on a 5 hour flight suffer?

Yikes.

We once were taking the ferry to Block Island for Thanksgiving and there was a wicked storm. Huge waves were all around and the boat was rocking like crazy. A couple left their cat in a carrier on the seat in front of us - one big swell - and what an odor! The cat had thrown up all over the place! The couple was oblivious - we had to go find them. But we did NOT offer to help clean up!

I think if you must travel with pets, be considerate of others. There are times when you must bring them along. But if you don't have to, I really believe it's better for the pet to be with a good boarder (who you've thoroughly checked out) and let them romp around merrily and get spoiled until you get back.

I agree--I just don't think it's right to do that to an animal, let alone subject fellow passengers to his "kisses from behind"!

I can't even imagine a 5 hour flight with a continuous supply of recycled fart air. Disgusting. Did you shower as soon as you got to your hotel? Twice? Did the flight attendant say anything to the woman? Is there an anti-acid a pet can take if they start smelling up the plane? What does the pet owner do with the poop if the dog has to do their business in their little cage? What do passengers do if they are allergic to pets? Ick, and then you had to eat plane food.
